One of the best views on the 'Pic du Midi d'Ossau' (2,884 m)
To get there the walk is not the shortest but relatively easy and well worth it. You will be rewarded with a postcard landscapes, as the 'Lac Gentau' (one of the six lakes Ayous) is inseparable from the silhouette of 'du Midi d’Ossau', stoning shape mountain often reflected in the water of the lake.
The hike counts around 3 hours 30 hours of walking starting at the car park marked on the map. First part of the path is along side the lake on the river 'Gave de Bious'. There is a little refreshment bar right on the edge of this lake.
The path is clearly marked, just follow the signs to the 'refuge d'Ayous'. After the starting lake there will be a part in the woods, following with a very open valley. On beginning of this valley there will be signs to turn right and to another path between woods. After passing the woods there will appear some treeless hills, it means you are not far from the destination, just keep straight to the refuge.
The 'Ayous refuge' gives a chance to stay over for a sunset and a sunrise and most likely experience extraordinary light changes.
The place is surrounded by six lakes; 'Lac Castérau', 'Lac du Miey', 'Lac Roumassot', 'Lac Bersau', 'Lac Paradis' and 'Lac Gentau, the one just in the front of the refuge. Don’t miss a longer circuit hike which allows you to go alongside the different lakes and not to take the same path on the way back. However, if the routes are affordable for everyone, it is preferable to be in a minimum physical condition and not to forget sunscreen, a hat and above all good hiking shoes.
